Travel Writer Tours Area
On Sept. 29, the Aurora Area Convention and Visitors Bureau PR staffer took travel writer Mike Michaelson on a whirlwind tour of the Aurora Area!
Michaelson, who writes for the Daily Herald and Northern Indiana’s Post-Tribune, toured the lush Fox Valley vineyard, winery and tasting room, dined at Kelly’s Pub and BlackStone Bar & Grill and checked out both the Old Barn Museum and Esther’s Place. He and his wife spent the night at the historic and engaging Homestead B&B. He also toured the iconic Farnsworth House earlier in the week.
The articles are slated to appear in the Oct. 28 issue of both newspapers—look for it. Unfortunately due to a geographic restriction set up by his editor at the Daily Herald, Michaelson could not include any attractions/sites from Aurora, Batavia, North Aurora or Montgomery.
Writer Showcase Coming Up
The AACVB will be heading to Palm Springs in late November to the annual Travel Media Showcase—a forum for CVB’s to highlight their unique and interesting attractions/amenities to an audience of serious writers looking for good story ideas.
Some 60 writers from across the country who write for a variety of media including magazine, newspaper, Web and books will meet with the various CVB’s via appointments.
CVB’s will have an opportunity to pitch their areas and story ideas to the writer, and in turn the writer expresses their areas of interest. In most cases, successful matches are made.
“I also plan on weeding out suitable travel writers to visit our area on a media press trip that we are planning for the spring,” said Laurie DiBerardino, public relations director for the AACVB. This press trip will be slated for late April or early May.
PR Tip O’ the Month: A Picture’s Worth a Thousand Words
Here at the Aurora Area CVB, we are assertively and actively pursuing leads for groups and leisure travelers. One of the most effective ways to gain exposure is by garnering positive media coverage via full articles and other mentions in print and Web.
However, in this day of crunched budgets and increasingly tight deadlines, reporters and writers are strained for time and often whether an article gets printed may be dependant upon the availability of useable photos that can be quickly accessed.
Often they look to us, the CVB staff, to provide core facts and interesting copy as well as, good, high-resolution images. Many of our attractions and dining places do NOT have photos that we can distribute, use in printed pieces, etc.
Photos that are posted on Web sites are low resolution and not suitable for any type of printed material.
Good photos taken of your events, attractions should be on your list of must-haves and should be updated frequently. Photos need to be at least 300dpi and in various formats. If you have some photos that you would like to share with the AACVB, please submit to market@enjoyaurora.com.
